Houston’s streets are filled with energy, but hidden amongst the hustle can be a chilling reality: child trafficking. Houston ranks 1st for the most human trafficking cases in the United states. Traffickers exploit vulnerable children. But by knowing child trafficking signs, you can help be part of the fight to stop it. Here’s how to spot potential victims and take action:
Child Trafficking Signs To Look For:
- Alone and Lost: A child wandering the streets without supervision, especially late at night, could be a runaway or a victim.
- Inappropriate Clothing: Does a child’s clothing seem ill-fitting for the weather or situation? This might indicate control by a trafficker.
- Fearful Demeanor: Is a child withdrawn, avoiding eye contact, or hesitant to speak? This could be a sign of fear or manipulation.
- Physical Signs: Look for injuries, signs of malnourishment, or excessive fatigue.
- Carrying Unusual Items: Does a child have an excessive amount of cash, multiple cell phones, or travel documents they shouldn’t have?
Signs of a Potentially Dangerous Adult:
- Controlling Behavior: Does an adult keep a tight grip on the child, limiting their movement or conversation with others?
- Inconsistency: Is the adult’s story about their relationship with the child vague or contradictory?
- Forced Interaction: Does the adult seem to be forcing the child to interact with strangers or engage in activities that make them uncomfortable?
What You Can Do
- Engage the Child Subtly: If it’s safe, try to strike up a casual conversation with the child. Ask them if they’re lost or need help.
- Observe Discreetly: Don’t put yourself or the child at risk. Note details about the child’s appearance, the adult’s description, and their location.
- Report Your Concerns: Call the National Human Trafficking Hotline (1-888-373-7888) or text “Help” to 233733. You can also report anonymously to the Houston Police Department by calling 911 (Non-emergency line: 713-884-3131).
Remember
- Your observations are crucial. Every detail can help investigators identify potential victims and traffickers.
- Trust your gut. If something feels wrong, it probably is.
- Don’t attempt to intervene yourself. Leave that to the authorities.
By staying vigilant and reporting your suspicions, you can be a hero on Houston’s streets. Together, we can create a safer city for all children
